Leveraging the cloud for your access control system

Cloud Based Access Control

One of the most convenient ways to mitigate the cost and complexity associated with an access control system is to have it hosted and managed by a cloud services provider. With a hosted access system you won’t have to worry about server and software capacity issues and other affairs such as administration, support and ongoing maintenance of your system. A cloud model allows you to retain as much control as you want over your access control system while also giving you the ability to outsource costly and repetitive tasks to a professional third party service provider.

With a hosted setup, the cloud services company provides the hardware and the software for running your access control system while you retain the responsibility for issuing access cards and setting access levels for your employees. With a fully managed access control model, the cloud provider will not only host your keyless entry system but will also manage, maintain and administer it. Some managed service providers in Houston and other parts of the country offer a hybrid model that is designed to give customers the level of control they want over their access control infrastructure.

Regardless of the model you choose, there are some real tangible benefits to be had from outsourcing your access control functions to a cloud services provider:

  • A managed service provider assumes responsibility for tasks such as performing software updates and regular back-ups, for provisioning or revoking access and for adding and deleting access cards.
  • With a hosted model, you can have the managed service provider print customzied access cards for your employees thereby eliminating the cost of owning and maintaining expensive access card printers.
  • Browser based user interfaces give your administrators easy access to the hosted server from their desktop, laptop or mobile devices.
  • By having a third-party manage your access control functions you have the flexibility to focus your IT team on other more high value applications and development projects.
  • A cloud model also liberates you from having to think about hardware and software upgrades and employee training issues.

OMNI has partnered with Honeywell and Rackspace to deliver a hosted access capability for existing and new customers in the Houston area. Under the arrangement, we offer a daily backup service in partnership with Rackspace.
